LED Display Terminology

When buying LED displays, we often see various professional terms showed on the packaging, such as pixels, pixel pitch, SMD, DIP, etc., some of them may be able to know a few according to the literal meaning, some of them maybe you don’t know what it means at all.

The following is a summary of the professional terminology of LED display.

(1) What is a pixel? What is the pixel diameter and pixel pitch?

Pixels are each light-emitting unit in the LED display that can be individually controlled, which is the smallest luminous unit of LED display. Pixel diameter refers to the diameter of each LED light-emitting pixel, in millimeters. Pixel pitch is the center distance between two pixels of LED screen called pixel pitch, also called dot pitch. The denser the dot pitch, the higher the pixel density per unit area. The higher the resolution, and the higher the cost. The smaller the pixel diameter, the smaller the dot pitch.

(2) What is an LED display module?

The LED display module is composed of several screen pixels, which is structurally independent and can constitute the smallest unit of the LED screen display.

(3) What is a cell board?

The unit board is the main component unit of the display screen, which is composed of luminescent materials and driving circuits, and the indoor screen is usually composed of the unit board.

(4) What is a LED module?

The LED module is the smallest screen unit of the outdoor LED screen. It is composed of a number of light-emitting diodes in a certain order, encapsulated in a fixed mold shell by welding, encapsulating and other processes, and becomes a led module.

(5) What is a unit cabinet?

The unit cabinet is the main component unit of the led screen, which is composed of unit boards in a certain order. The outdoor screen is usually composed of the unit cabinet.

(6) What is DIP?

DIP packaging is an abbreviation of dual inline-pin package. It is also called dual in-line packaging technology. Dual in-line packaging is an integrated circuit chip packaged in a dual in-line package. In this package, the number of pins is generally not more than 100, which can easily realize the through-hole welding of the PCB board, and has good compatibility with the main board. It is mainly used for indoor full-color screens.

(7) What is SMD?

SMD is a surface mounted device (abbreviation for surface mounted device), which is characterized by high assembly density, small electronic products, and light weight. The volume and weight of SMD components are only about 1/10 of traditional plug-in components. The internal full-color display can realize single-point maintenance and effectively overcome the mosaic phenomenon.

(8) What is a lamp insertion module?

The lamp insertion module refers to the DIP-encapsulated lamp passing the lamp foot through the PCB board and filling the lamp hole with solder.

The module made by this process is the lamp insertion module.

The advantages are high brightness and heat dissipation Good.

The disadvantage is the pixel density small.

(9) What is a surface mount module?

The surface mount is also called SMT. The SMT packaged lamp is welded to the surface of the PCB board by a welding process. The lamp pin does not need to pass through the PCB board. The module made by this process is called a surface mount module.

The advantages are good display effect, the pixel density is large, suitable for indoor viewing;

The disadvantage is that the brightness is not high enough, and the heat dissipation of the lamp itself is not good enough.

(10) What is a sub-surface stick module?

Sub-Surface Mount is a product between DIP and SMT. Its LED lamp packaging surface is the same as SMT, but its positive and negative level pins are the same as DIP. It is also soldered through PCB during production .

The advantages are high brightness and good performance.

The disadvantages are complex process and difficult maintenance.

(11) What is three in one?

Three-in-one refers to vertically aligning SMT lamps with three different colors of RGB LED chips at a certain pitch;

The advantages of three-in-one is good effect;

The disadvantages are complicated process, difficult maintenance and high cost.

(12) What is three in one?

It is to vertically align the three independently packaged SMT lamps of RGB at a certain interval.

(13) What is the difference between an indoor module full-color screen and a patch full-color screen?

a. Light emitting part: The display module of the module full-color screen is generally yellow-green, and the price of the pure green module is more expensive; the patch full-color screen generally uses pure green die.

b. Display effect: The pixels of the full-color screen of the module have a thicker visual feeling, lower brightness, and are prone to mosaic phenomenon; The consistency of the patch full-color screen is better, and the brightness is higher.

c. Maintenance: The full color of the module is not easy to maintain, and the replacement cost of the entire module is relatively high; The full color of the patch is easy to maintain and can be repaired and replaced by a single lamp.

(14) What are real pixels?

Real pixels refer to the 1:1 relationship between the number of physical pixels on the display screen and the actual display pixels. The actual number of points on the display screen can only display the image information of how many points.

(15) What is a virtual pixel?

Virtual pixel refers to the 1:N (N=2, 4) relationship between the physical pixel number of the display screen and the actual display pixel number. It can display 2 or 4 times more image pixels than the actual pixels of the display screen.

(16) What is a perspective? What is perspective? What is the best perspective?

Viewing angle: when the brightness of the viewing direction drops to 1/2 of the brightness of the normal line of the LED display. The angle between the two observation directions and the normal direction in the same plane. Divided into horizontal and vertical perspective;

Viewing angle: It is the angle between the direction of the image content on the display screen and the normal of the display screen.

Best viewing angle: It is the angle between the clearest direction of the image content and the normal line, which can see the content on the display screen without flat color

(17) What is brightness?

Brightness is the brightness level from the darkest to the whitest of the image that the human eye can distinguish. The more brightness levels the human eye can resolve, the greater the color space of the display and the greater the potential for displaying rich colors.

(18) What is resolution?

The number of pixels of the LED display screen is called the resolution of the LED display screen. Resolution is the total number of pixels of the display screen, which determines the information capacity of a display screen.

(19) What is gray scale?

Gray scale refers to the degree of light and dark changes of pixels. The gray scale of a basic color generally has 8 levels to 1024 levels. For example, if the gray level of each primary color is 256 levels, for a dual-primary color screen, the display color is 256×256=64K colors, which is also called a 256-color display screen.

(20) What is a dual primary color?

Most color LED display screens today are dual-primary color screens, that is, each pixel has two LED dies: one for red light and one for green light. The pixel is red when the red die is on, the pixel is green when the green die is on, and the pixel is yellow when both the red and green dies are on. Among them, red and green are called primary colors.

(21) What is full color?

The red and green primary colors plus the blue primary color, the three primary colors constitute a full color. Since the technology of forming full-color blue tubes and pure green dies is now mature, the market basically uses full-color.
